How Much Does a PIV Unit Cost to Install in the UK?

That is a fixed price, not an estimate, and it includes the PIV unit itself, all labour, an EIC electrical certificate and the manufacturer's warranty. Heated models cost a little more: the Vent-Axia PureAir Home starts at £945 installed and the Nuaire Drimaster Eco at £1,045. There are no call-out fees, no survey charges and no "final price on inspection" surprises. The only common extra is an RCD upgrade at your consumer unit, which is £75 if your fuse board needs one. Why most PIV cost guides quote £600 to £1,200

If you have been researching PIV prices, you will have seen the same answer everywhere: somewhere between £600 and £1,200, "depending on the unit, your property and the installer". That range is technically true and practically useless. It exists because the big cost-guide websites are averaging quotes from hundreds of general electricians and handymen, most of whom install a PIV unit occasionally rather than daily. They price defensively because they do not know how long the job will take them.

A specialist installer does not need that safety margin. We fit PIV units every working day, we know exactly what a loft-mounted installation involves, and we buy units at trade volume. That is how we can publish one fixed figure, £895, and stand behind it. If a company will not tell you the price before they visit, they have not decided what it is yet.

What the £895 includes

The EIC certificate matters more than most homeowners realise. A PIV unit is a fixed electrical installation, so the work should be certified by a competent person. Plenty of cheap installs skip this, which becomes a problem when you sell the house and your solicitor asks for the paperwork. Ours is included in the price, not sold back to you as an extra.

Heated vs non-heated PIV: prices and running costs

A standard PIV unit runs on a small continuous fan, which is why the electricity cost is so low, roughly £40 to £80 a year depending on your tariff and settings. Heated models only use meaningful power on cold days, when the element takes the chill off the incoming loft air. For most properties the non-heated unit does the job, because loft air is naturally pre-warmed by heat rising through the house. If your loft is well insulated at the floor and cold as a result, or the diffuser will sit outside a bedroom door, the heated models are worth the extra £50 to £150. What can take the price above £895

Fixed pricing only works if it is honest about the exceptions, so here they are. An RCD upgrade is the most common one. If your consumer unit does not have RCD protection on the circuit we connect to, current wiring regulations require us to add it, and we charge a flat £75 for that. We will tell you before any work starts, not after.

The other exception is property type. The £895 price is for a standard loft-mounted installation, which covers the large majority of houses and bungalows. Flats and homes without loft access need a wall-mounted PIV unit instead, which is a different product and a different installation, so those are priced individually. Very large properties occasionally need a higher-capacity unit or a second diffuser. If any of this applies to you, you get a fixed written price before we book the job. Nobody gets a number invented on the doorstep.

PIV cost vs the cost of doing nothing

£895 sounds like a lot until you price up living with condensation and mould. Redecorating a mould-affected room means stain-blocking, treating and repainting, and the mould comes back within months because the moisture is still there, so you pay for it again. Ruined curtains, blinds, mattresses and clothes in cold cupboards add up quietly. Wiping down windows every morning costs nothing but your time, every single day, forever.

Then there is the part that matters more than money. The NHS advises that damp and mould in the home are linked to respiratory problems, and that children, older people and anyone with asthma or a weakened immune system are more at risk. A PIV unit tackles the cause, excess moisture in the air, rather than repeatedly cleaning up the symptom. It is a one-off £895 against an open-ended annual bill and a health risk that does not improve on its own.
